書信內容： 友宜學棣如唔： 我是目前定居在美國的賴正雄老師，自從你嘉中畢業以來已近五十年了。
時常在新聞媒體看到你，可惜迄無機會和你連絡。
記得我們上次見面應是2000年在台北圓山飯店吧，當時你擔任桃園市警察局局長。
時光荏苒，又過了23個年頭了。
回憶20多年來，你的人生確起了重大變化，由警界最高首長退休，換跑道走入政界，並獲得新北市民支持與愛戴，一任再連任，是台灣政界人士公認的新起之秀。  
從學生時代起，你沈著、穩重、認真與負責的態度，就讓師生對你另眼相看，你一向做事前不吹牛，事成也不邀功，實在難得。但你不善於包裝自己的個性仍然不變。
至於外交的聯誼能力仍然稍嫌不足。不過人非聖賢，不能樣樣皆通。最近因國民黨對2024總統提名作業，因故有所猶豫、暫停，有些反對你的人，指出你缺乏國際觀，恐不適任台灣總統。本人頗不以為然。
其實馬英九、陳水扁、蔡英文皆非天生的總統料子（They are not born presidents)! 一個好的領導不必萬能，只要能知己、知人、並善用人即可，古今中外皆然。如過去的蕭萬長校友，政大外交系出身，最後變成經貿專家。另張俊雄校友，由律師出身，後來成為閣揆，指揮全台行政官員。  你是我的學生，我教過你英文和做人道理。你對英文的勤奮學習精神令本人感動。尤其嘉中的英文水準一向不比台灣其他著名的高中差。
你於大專聯考放榜後對於究竟上中國文化大學？還是上中央警官學校？等一些問題感到十分徬徨，所以你來我家，經過一番溝通、了解後，當時我鼓勵你去念警官學校，我的看法是你應在大的環境磨鍊才能出人頭地，畢竟條條大路通羅馬。
數十年後證明我當時的看法沒錯，當然你勝人的鍥而不捨的精神才是成功的主因。  
最近你的新加坡之行，予人印象是，你能虛心接受別人的批評。
當然除了新加坡外，仍有其他國家，如日本、韓國，尤其是日、美兩國。你必須讓日、美兩國政府明白未來台灣總統的想法、看法與做法，因為這些攸關他們的國家利益，尤其是美國。
如果你順利獲得國民黨提名，或徵召為2024的台灣總統候選人之一，美國之行絕對必要也十分重要。
老師雖已年邁，但頭腦、體力還行，希望有生之年，也能聯絡其他校友提供一些意見，供你參考，當然你的智囊團中不乏優秀人才。
嘉中校友遍佈全世界，本人於2013年創立「嘉中校友全聯會」，迄今約有數十萬人次校友閱覽，相信必能發揮校友的力量來支持你。
隨著中共懾台政策與手段加緊，部分台灣民眾可能由支持國民黨
轉而支持民進黨。的確國民黨對中國政策顯然已經僵化。
但你必須向支持你的朋友說明：
1.民進黨的主張台獨是一個理念，離實行尚有一大段距離，風險不低，且並非所有民進黨皆附和這個主張。可以鼓吹，但不必負責。
2.而國民黨並非全部支持「統一」，若台灣能在大國（美、中、日）之夾縫中，求生存，亦非不可？
3.另外對嘉中校友的交代是，你的加入國民黨是高三下時，導師的勸導。但你並未見風轉舵，反觀有些政客則是搖擺不定，國、民兩黨進進出出。你一向堅持的理念-相信你服務台灣人民的信念永不改變！
4. 嘉中校友中，統、獨皆有。

但希望有一個不變的共同理念：凡是同樣來自「山仔頂」或生活過「黃土高原」或爬過「旭陵」上學的前後輩同學，宜互相尊重、愛護並支持。如果今天國民黨或校友中有比你侯友宜更好的人選，我們也可以轉而支持他。  嘉中雖然人才輩出，但能爬到你今天這個地步，殊屬空前。台南一中校友中，即使很少誇贊他人的阿扁前總統，都公開稱讚你是「難得的人才」、名嘴沈富雄也不時稱讚你。相信以你的才識被提名的可能性極高，如是，則不僅是你們嘉義朴子侯氏家族的光榮，也是全體嘉中校友的榮耀。


最後老師預祝你能夠順利獲得台灣全民的支持。際此慶祝傳統的嘉中校慶日（4月25日）前夕，謹以上文勉之。

聽老人開講-41「What I Know About Mayor Hou」-我所認識的侯友宜  
Mayor Hou, Yeou Yee was elected in 2020 as Mayor of New Taipei Coty.
He graduated from the Police Academy in Taiwan sometime in 1979. Ever since graduation，he started as the lowest ranking  police officer until he became the highest chief.
He won not only the recognition and compliment of the then President Chen, Shui-Bien but the trust of most of the Taiwanese.
In fact, he was better known as the toughest cop and an antagonist by most gánsters in Taiwan.
They hated him but held him in awe and respect, ironically!  
However, a few years ago,to the astonishment of most people, he resigned from the highest post of the police and became a vice-Mayor of the New Taipei City.
Ever since he transferred himself from the post of a police officer to mayorship, he has devoted himself to the daily hard work of the City, assisting the Mayor.
He won the trust and accreditation of most of the City people.
Therefore, four years later, he ran for mayorship and won overwhelmingly the election, becoming Mayor of  New Taipei City himself.  
During 1972-75, he was one of my students in Chiayi (a southern city of Taiwan)High School in Taiwan.
Though not one of the brightest students in class, he distinguished himself as an honest, outspoken, diligent, responsible and conscientious students in my class.  
Based on the recent poll, he is very likely to be nominated by KMT, the opposition political party of Taiwan as a candidate for Presidency for 2024. He may be qualified for the position  but some others think otherwise . They doubt about his capabilities and competence.   
In my opinion, not everyone can be perfect. Nor can anyone be a born leader! Of course, there is room for improvement for him, too. But he did show outstanding leadership as a mayor.
And he should be able to live up to the Taiwanese expectations as a good President as long as he can live and learn.
He is a person who practices more than he preaches. It may be certain that he can achieve his political ambition, winning Taiwan Presidency, if he could keep learning something about his attitude towards some political issues, foreign policy and heighten his view domestically and globally in some ways. Nothing is impossible through constant practice and adjustments.
As a home room teacher of Hou in his high school life, I firmly believe that together with his friends, school mates and his constituents, and  his family, everything can be working well with him. May God bless him!  

P.S. Why do I have to write this article in English? People might be wondering. Well, the sole and exclusive reason is that it may cause attention of more overseas Taiwanese and foreigners to a better understanding concerning who he is, and whether he is dependable. It may also cause Hou’s attention to the fact that he should brush up on English so as to be able to have better communication with leaders of other countries in the future.
