最早的實用彩照發明者是美國人Frederic Eugene Ives於1896年發明的三原色濾鏡疊合法。隨後德國人Adolf Miethe與俄國人Gorsky將這項技術繼續改進發揚，尤其以Gorsky最著名。
1908年，Etheldreda Laing為兩個女兒記錄的彩色童年。要知道那是黑白照片的時代，彩色照片1907年才投入市場，Laing對此產生濃厚興趣，在英國的牛津替自己的生活與一對可愛的女兒留下了珍貴的早年彩色影像。她也因此成為最早留下彩色照片的攝影先驅。
